Compare - Men's Health Test (EW)

The following is a list of what is included in the item above. Click the test(s) below to view what biomarkers are measured along with an explanation of what the biomarker is measuring.

Also known as: Cortisol AM

Cortisol, A.M.

A cortisol level is a blood test that measures the amount of cortisol, a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland. The test is done to check for increased or decreased cortisol production. Cortisol is a steroid hormone released from the adrenal gland in response to ACTH, a hormone from the pituitary gland in the brain. Cortisol affects many different body systems. It plays a role in: bone, circulatory system, immune system. metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and protein. ervous system and stress responses.

Also known as: Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate, DHEA SO4, DHEA Sulfate Immunoassay, DHEAS, Transdehydroandrosterone

DHEA SULFATE

DHEA-sulfate test measures the amount of DHEA-sulfate in the blood. DHEA-sulfate is a weak male hormone (androgen) produced by the adrenal gland in both men and women.

Estradiol

Estradiol (estradiol-17 beta, E2) is part of an estrogen that is a group of steroids that regulate the menstrual cycle and function as the main female sex hormones. Estrogens are responsible for the development of female sex organs and secondary sex characteristics and are tied to the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. They are considered the main sex hormones in women and are present in small quantities in men. Estradiol (E2) is the predominant form of estrogen and is produced primarily in the ovaries with additional amounts produced by the adrenal glands in women and in the testes and adrenal glands in men. Estradiol levels are used in evaluating ovarian function. Estradiol levels are increased in cases of early (precocious) puberty in girls and gynecomastia in men. Its main use has been in the differential diagnosis of amenorrhea – for example, to determine whether the cause is menopause, pregnancy, or a medical problem. In assisted reproductive technology (ART), serial measurements are used to monitor follicle development in the ovary in the days prior to in vitro fertilization. Estradiol is also sometimes used to monitor menopausal hormone replacement therapy.

Also known as: Testosterone Free Dialysis and Total LCMSMS

Free Testosterone

In many cases, measurement of total testosterone provides the doctor with adequate information. However, in certain cases, for example when the level of SHBG is abnormal, a test for free or bioavailable testosterone may be performed as it may more accurately reflect the presence of a medical condition.

TESTOSTERONE, TOTAL,

A testosterone test measures the amount of the male hormone, testosterone, in the blood. Both men and women produce this hormone. In males, the testicles produce most of the testosterone in the body. Levels are most often checked to evaluate signs of low testosterone: In boys -- early or late puberty and in men -- impotence, low level of sexual interest, infertility, thinning of the bones In females, the ovaries produce most of the testosterone and levels are most often checked to evaluate signs of higher testosterone levels, such as: decreased breast size, excess hair growth, increased size of the clitoris. irregular or absent menstrual periods and male-pattern baldness or hair thinning.

When and Why the Men's Health Lab Test May Be Ordered

Timing of the Test: The Men's Health Lab Test may be ordered at different stages of a man's life, depending on his health concerns and clinical indications. It is commonly performed in various scenarios, including:

  1. Routine Health Checkup: Healthcare providers may recommend this test as part of a routine health checkup to assess overall health, screen for potential hormonal imbalances, and identify health risks.

  2. Assessment of Hormonal Health: Men experiencing symptoms related to hormonal imbalances, such as changes in energy levels, mood swings, or sexual dysfunction, may undergo this test to identify potential causes.

  3. Evaluation of Adrenal Gland Function: Cortisol and DHEA sulfate levels can provide insights into adrenal gland health and the body's stress response.

  4. Assessment of Testosterone Levels: Testosterone is a key male sex hormone, and its measurement is crucial for diagnosing conditions such as hypogonadism (low testosterone) and monitoring testosterone replacement therapy.

  5. Reproductive Health Evaluation: Estradiol and free testosterone levels are relevant markers for assessing reproductive health, libido, and erectile function.

  6. Fertility Assessment: For men seeking fertility evaluation, this test can help identify hormonal imbalances that may affect sperm production and quality.

What the Men's Health Lab Test Checks For

The Men's Health Lab Test checks for a range of hormonal and metabolic markers, including:

  • Cortisol AM: This marker measures morning cortisol levels, which can provide insights into adrenal gland function, stress response, and overall well-being.

  • DHEA Sulfate: DHEA sulfate is a precursor to sex hormones, and its measurement can help assess adrenal gland health, hormone balance, and energy levels.

  • Estradiol: Estradiol is a form of estrogen and is important for male reproductive health, bone density, and overall well-being.

  • Testosterone Free: Free testosterone levels are assessed to evaluate hormonal balance and male sexual health.

  • Bonus Marker: Testosterone Total: Total testosterone levels are measured to provide a comprehensive view of male hormonal status.

How Health Care Providers Use the Results of the Men's Health Lab Test

Healthcare providers use the results of the Men's Health Lab Test to:

  1. Assess Hormone Levels: The test helps providers evaluate hormone levels critical for male reproductive health, libido, and overall well-being.

  2. Diagnose Hormonal Imbalances: Abnormal hormone levels can help diagnose conditions such as hypogonadism (low testosterone) or adrenal dysfunction, which may be causing symptoms.
